AIMS OF THE TRAINING : This course is based upon experience of clinical work with emotionally disturbed adults. The course follows the standards recommended by the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). The Indian Psychoanalytical Society (IPS) is a component society of the IPA. Completion of the training leads to professional qualification as a psychoanalyst.

The qualified psychoanalyst is then registered with the IPS and the IPA as a full member. Membership in the IPA also means that the qualified analyst would have international registration and technically be recognised worldwide. Becoming a full member includes voting rights only after writing reasonably acceptable papers of 8,000 to 10,000 words based on the clinical experience of each of the two training cases.

Content and Methods : The interested applicant is first expected to fill in an application form provided by the Training Committee. The student is required to be in personal analysis 4-5 times a week with a Training Analyst of the IPS from the time he/she has been accepted for the course. In case the student is a fresh applicant, i.e. not in personal analysis with a Training Analyst for at least a year, he/she must have personal analysis with a Training Analyst for at least a year before registration can be considered with the Indian Psychoanalytical Society. During this period of provisional acceptance, a student need have little contact with the Training Organisation. Registration is initiated by the student's Training Analyst after discussion with the student.

After Registration, the student is offered the following facilities:

  • Use of library facilities
  • Block subscription at reduced rates to the International Journal of Psychoanalysis
  • Allocation of a Student Progress Advisor

At the beginning of the next academic year (July), the student will begin Baby Observation Seminars and Psychoanalytical Theory Seminars. The analytic trainee will attend the weekly Baby Observation Seminars for the first year and the fortnightly Psychoanalytical Theory Seminars for the first and second years (Freud in the first year and Klein in the second year).

At the end of the 2 years of personal analysis, Baby Observation Seminars and Psychoanalytical Theory Seminars, the student will be expected to treat 2 adult patients 4-5 times a week along with weekly supervision for each case by 2 different supervisors. Each of these 2 cases will be expected to be seen for at least 2 years. However, the final outcome will be decided in consultation with the supervisor. At the same time the student will continue with more advanced theory and clinical seminars. The full course should, therefore, take approximately 5 years before qualification. The personal analysis will continue at least till qualification.

Students who are seeing training cases will be required to attend certain specified seminars. Students are required to attend weekly Clinical Seminars and weekly Advanced Theory Seminars during the entire duration of the training.

Suitability : Minimum requirement for admission is a University degree (or suitable substitute). The applicant will first have an informal meeting with either of the joint secretaries of the Training Committee to find out about the requirements and costs of the training. Subsequently, interviews will be arranged with 2 psychoanalysts. If accepted the applicant will make arrangements to start his personal analysis with a qualified Training Analyst. The personal analysis is kept private to the student. His/her analyst will be asked if the student can be registered as a student with the IPS in Calcutta. His/her analyst will then be asked if the student is ready to take adult cases under supervision, and finally if there's any objection to his/her qualifying.
